In keeping with the Journal's pledge to publish the best science in an expeditious and excellent manner, STEM CELLS continues to bring to its readership manuscripts which are significant and timely. The Journal's interval from editorial decision to publication averages only 100 days. This is, in great measure, attributable to the dedication of our experienced Editorial Board to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for the excellence and speed of their peer reviews. The turnaround time for reviews last year averaged a brief 16 days one of the fastest in the world of publishing!
STEM CELLS was also proud to speedily publish, as a 1996 supplement, the proceedings from the Keystone Symposium, Molecular Regulation of Platelet Production, which was held in Taos, New Mexico, February 16-22, 1996. By publishing some of the first papers on the clinical trials of thrombopoietin (TPO), the Journal provided an international forum for assessing the state-of-the-science from molecular biology, cytology, and physiology to contemporary clinical approaches of megakaryocyte biology and platelet production. Keystone Symposia has again invited us to organize the second conference on Molecular Regulation of Platelet Production, together with Dr. David J. Kuter of Massachusetts General Hospital. This symposium will be held at Lake Tahoe, January 10-15, 1998. Please contact Keystone Symposia for further information about attendance.
STEM CELLS continues to be heralded as the premier journal for stem and progenitor cell biology due, in large part, to the commitment and conscientiousness of our Editorial Board. We especially acknowledge our gratitude to the retiring Board members: Dr. Nader Abraham, Dr. Gian Paolo Bagnara, Dr. David W. Golde, Dr. Atsushi Kuramoto and Dr. William P. Steward. They have served with distinction. We are pleased to welcome to the Journal's Editorial Board Dr. Robert Hromas, Dr. Yukihiko Kitamura and Dr. Mariusz Ratajczak.
As you will have noticed, the journal is now published in a larger, more "reader cordial" format, allowing for enhanced figures and tables, as well as lower page charges for our authors. In an effort to keep the cost of the Journal most reasonable, it has become necessary to institute a submission fee. The non-refundable fee of US$35.00 will ensure that all submitted papers are given the quickest and best possible reviews, and will help defray the increasing costs of air express deliveries which enable the Journal to maintain its place as one of the fastest peer-reviewed journals.
We enter this, our fifteenth year, with the enthusiasm of our outstanding Editorial Board which rededicates itself to the furtherance of excellence by publishing the finest manuscripts with dispatch and excellence. We thank our readers for their constructive suggestions and critiques which have served to strengthen the Journal, and we invite you to continue to do so during the coming year. I am personally thankful for the good counsel and support from our Associate Editors and our Comité des Sages Advisory Board. It is a great pleasure to work with them and the members of our Editorial Board.
