In keeping with the Journal's pledge to publish the best science in an expeditious and excellent manner, STEM CELLS continues to bring to its readers manuscripts which are significant and timely. In 1997, the Journal's interval from editorial decision to publication averaged just 97 days. This is, in great measure, attributable to the dedication of our experienced Editorial Board, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for the excellence and speed of their peer reviews. The turnaround time for reviews last year averaged a brief 18 daysone of the fastest in the world of publishing!
STEM CELLS was also proud to speedily publish two supplements in 1997: Hematopoietic Stem Cells, reporting the proceedings of the July 1996 international conference at Hohenzollern Castle, Germany. This is a valuable resource for understanding the experimental protocols, the assay systems and the working models of early hematopoiesis and hematopoietic stem cells and their progeny. Radiation Injury and the Chernobyl Catastrophe, also published in 1997, is the report of the International Conference on the Health Effects of Low-Dose Radiation (Houston) and Biological Effects of Radiation Injury (Minsk), focusing on joint research activities to better analyze and understand the impact of radiation exposure created by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
In 1998, we will publish the proceedings of the Keystone Symposium on Molecular Regulation of Platelet Production, Thrombopoietin: From Molecule to Medicine. Thrombopoietin, the prime regulator of platelet formation, is now in global clinical trials. These proceedings will not only capture TPO's molecular biology, but also will emphasize its present and future clinical utilization. We are pleased to include in this current issue Neutralization of Biological Activity and Inhibition of Receptor Binding by Antibodies against Human Thrombopoietin, from Dr. Takashi Kato's group at Kirin Brewery Co., Ltd. (see 54).
We will also publish another supplement this year, entitled: Characteristics and Potentials of Blood Stem Cells. This volume will comprehensively summarize the state of the art of hematopoietic stem cells, including peripheral and cord blood stem cell transplantation, gene therapy and future avenues of diagnosis and treatment. Look for both of these volumes in early Spring of 1998.
STEM CELLS continues to be heralded as the premier journal for stem and progenitor cell biology due, in large part, to the commitment and conscientiousness of our Editorial Board. We especially acknowledge our gratitude to the retiring Board members: Dr. Vittorio Rizzoli, Dr. Desmond N. Carney and Dr. Daniel D. von Hoff, all of whom will continue their editorial duties with AlphaMed Press's acclaimed journal for practicing oncologists and hematologists, The Oncologist. Also retiring from the Board are Dr. Judith C. Gasson, Dr. Gunther Konwalinka, Dr. Leo Sachs and Dr. Michael W. Schuster. They have all served with distinction. We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Curt I. Civin and Dr. D.F. Hoelzer as Associate Editors. They join our Founding Associate Editors, Dr. Donald Metcalf and Dr. Fumimaro Takaku. Dr. Hal E. Broxmeyer, former Associate Editor, resumes his role as Editorial Board member.
We enter this, our sixteenth year, with the enthusiasm of our outstanding Editorial Board, which rededicates itself to the furtherance of good science by publishing the finest manuscripts with dispatch and excellence. We thank our readers for their constructive suggestions and critiques which have served to strengthen the Journal, and we invite you to continue to do so during the coming year. I am personally thankful for the good counsel and support from our Comité des Sages Advisory Board. It is a great pleasure to work with them and the members of our Editorial Board.
